2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid boring, and boring is a good thing

(download)

“Boring.” That is how my spouse described the 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid I tested recently. “The interior is boring, the ride is boring … it’s just boring.”

It is also based on one of the best-selling cars in America for more than a decade. I guess boring is what REALLY sells when it comes to passenger cars here.

The Toyota Camry has also garnered quite a few automotive accolades as well including, for the second year in a row, being ranked No. 1 on the “American-Made Index” as compiled by the editors at Cars.com. The 2010 Camry was also rated “The best mid-sized sedan” by Motor Trend and Forbes Magazine praised the Camry Hybrid by including it in “2010’s Best Cars for Commuters.”

“I know, I know … but it’s boring.”

What it is is a mid-sized sedan that offers one of the most sedate rides on the market. Trouble sleeping? Drive a Camry. It is also one of the safest and easiest to drive rides on the market and includes all of the latest technology from the automaker.

A more spirited experience can be had by opting for the V-6 gas-powered Camry, but “green-o-philes” will push the Camry Hybrid with its I-4 gas engine mated to a small electric motor for a combined 187hp rating and 31 mpg city and 35 mpg highway.  The Camry Hybrid is one of the few hybrids on sale today whose fuel economy does not improve with gridlock like the Prius.

Good news for those surrendering to urbanization – Toyota has announced they are expanding the Prius line to offer more body styles and let us hope Camry Hybrid benefits from a much-needed Hybrid Synergy Drive system upgrade. Lexus borrowed the Camry Hybrid powertrain for the HS250h sedan released in 2009 and it fell flat.

The base Camry Hybrid can be had for about $26,575. Our recent tester came with such “boring” add-ons as leather package, power moonroof, voice-activated DVD navigation, JBL audio system and hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth wireless. This adds up to about $33,150.

So the 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid is “boring” huh? Apparently, boring is good.

2011 Buick Regal: Part Deux

(download)

“I never quite thought of the Regal as a sports sedan myself, but the GNX from 1987 (Regal was a coupe back then) did get close and the new car will offer a turbo motor once more to tempt eager drivers.”

That is what I wrote last summer after my first experience with the new 2011 Regal from Buick. Recently I took delivery of the turbocharged CXL T-type model and well, not much has changed.

My hope is that Buick will soon regale us with a GNX knock-off as this car did little to up its ante in the sport sedan game. Sure, there is a turbo motor under the hood and yes, there is selectable sport and tour modes, but for the most part it all falls short of my expectations.

While I could feel a difference in the harshness of the ride when selecting sport mode, I did not see much of a change in anything else. No excited throttle tip-in, same vague steering feel and only a gear downshift every once in a while and in corners found that to be very rough. Third gear returned a bit of vibration not found elsewhere nor when the Regal was set to normal or tour mode.

All-in-all I still like what GM is doing with the Regal and look forward to future updates for the nameplate. I find the styling attractive inside and out and build quality is up to global competitive standards.

While the equipment list showed my tester to include a premium audio upgrade I found it to fall short of today’s “premium” mark for both the automaker and the industry overall. The leather package was very nice but the seats took FOREVER to warm up via the seat heater on a week we experienced our lowest temps of the season so far.

The turbo powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter Ecotec inline four-cylinder engine with a dual-scroll turbocharger, all of which generates what GM calls “V-6-like power” of 220 ponies. Well, maybe a couple of years ago that was V-6-like but not by today’s standards. A six-speed automatic gearbox backs up the engine and offers manual shift control and all power is sent to the front wheels and tires (19s on our CXL turbo model Regals).

Fuel economy comes in at 18 mpg city and 28 mpg highway on regular unleaded fuel.

Final assembly for the 2011 Regals is Russelheim, Germany so one would expect the little Buick to give European badged vehicles a run for their money. The Regal is nice and is heading in the right direction for both the badge and the brand. It is not there yet but with delivery of performance-based concepts we have been teased with in recent past, who knows?

Pricing for the 2011 Buick Regal CXL Turbo sedan begins at $28,745 with out tester coming in at $32,190.

2011 Scion xB: Which Way Funkytown?

(download)

When Toyota first launched its Scion division of vehicles aimed at younger, hipper consumers the buying public threw them for a loop. The funky new box on wheels (dubbed “xB”) was actually being snatched up by boomers hand over fist.

Since that time the playing field has leveled a bit and other automakers have responded with their own Lego-mobile on wheels. And looking at sales figures from 2010 the Scion division has lost sales at a rate of nearly 22 percent over the previous year. Sure, some of this may be attributed to the fact that 2010 was perhaps the worst year for Toyota publicity-wise, and lower fuel prices combined with better domestic product availability certainly was no help to the bottom line either.

Toyota needs to turn things around in the Scion division. We recently took delivery of a 2011 xB model and despite their boasting freshened interiors and exteriors I still saw much of the same as when the model line was first introduced years ago. Time for some more of that revolution in the segment, not evolution (and that may be coming soon with the early-in-2011 launch of the new Scion iQ microcar).

For the xB, I noticed little change over the previous design but did enjoy the new tilt and telescopic steering wheel and enhanced gauge display. As for the redesigned seats, I was already uncomfortable an hour into a two-and-a-half-hour trip over the weekend. Ouch. And my passenger (i.e. spousal unit) felt the same.

I still enjoy xB for what it is: An urban utility vehicle that is easy to operate and offers some of the best interior space in the segment. It is powered by a spirited 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 158hp but ultimately is hindered in both smooth operation and fuel economy (20 mpg city/28 mpg highway) by still being mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox. A manual transmission is available but our tester came with the auto. Pricing begins at $16,950 with our test model coming in at $17,825.

Maybe it is time to put a hybrid into the Scion lineup. Prius is going gangbusters in sales numbers. Heck, maybe with the new Prius models coming later this year Toyota should mothball Scion and spin off Prius into its third division. It is fun to mix a bit of funky into a functional lifestyle but at the end of the day Toyota has to sell cars and when one entire division is outsold 2-to-1 by the parent company’s minivan, perhaps it is time for some serious discussions.

2011 Chrysler Town & Country: Long Live the King

(download)

The king is dead … long live the king!

Chrysler announced last week that its “luxury” minivan, the Town & Country, has once again taken the top spot in segment sales leadership and this week came the “better-late-than-never” launch of an all-new version at the North American International Auto Show.

OK, it still looks like a minivan and Chrysler has chosen to stay away from drastic styling upgrades such as brought on by imported competition this year. Toyota, Honda and Nissan all radically redesigned their minivans recently.

For Chrysler it appears about refining what has brought them back to the top of the sales charts. I admit even have been a bit critical in recent years of the Dodge/Chrysler minivans becoming a bit stale despite offering a few new segment innovations. Interior and exterior design and materials were still, well, blah.

So while keeping the shock and awe in check for the 2011 model, Chrysler gets major kudos for delivering it with an all-new powertrain and nicely appointed interior.

The model we tested recently came so nicely dressed that I would not recommend it for the “soccer mom” crowd. No sippy cups and juice boxes allowed in here. Instead, as I did, load it up with (adult) family and friends for when you all want to get together somewhere. We fit six adults in comfort and did not find the new Pentastar V-6 lacking whatsoever when needing to get around in traffic.

While still offering Stow n Go second-row seating and a fold-flat third row, the Town & Country delivered comfort and convenience a-plenty. Ours included updated navigation and entertainment package, although we did put any Spongebob videos in the DVD player.

Taking off in the new Chrysler does not mean safety is left behind. The 2011 Town & Country minivan has more than 40 standard safety features, including SafetyTec. The SafetyTec package provides customers peace of mind with industry-leading safety features including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross path detection, ParkSense rear park assist, ParkView rear back up camera, rain sensing wipers and Smart Beam headlamps. Additional standard safety features include supplemental all-row side curtain air bags, front-seat-mounted driver and passenger air bags, electronic stability control (ESC) with electronic traction control and brake assist, power-adjustable pedals and power sliding doors with obstacle detection.

The new V-6 I mentioned is the new Pentastar engine found across the model lineup now and produces 283hp from the 3.6-liter engine used in the Town & Country while delivering 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway thanks in part to the six-speed automatic transmission. We even saw better fuel economy than that at times despite carrying a full crew.

The Touring-L model minivan delivered to us rode on 17-inch wheels and tires and included a driver convenience package that added Bluetooth streaming audio, heated steering wheel, remote USB port, Uconnect Voice Command with Bluetooth, heated second row seats and media center with the nav and DVD and 30GB hard drive. The Town & Country can also be configured as a remote “hot spot” for internet delivery as well as SIRIUS Backseat TV (to keep backseat drivers occupied).

Pricing begins at $32,160 at the Touring level with our tester coming in at $34,475, several thousand less than the loaded Toyota minivan we tested several months back.

The Chrysler Town & Country has retaken the throne of sales leadership in the minivan segment and as this is the automaker’s second-best-selling vehicle in the lineup let us hope its success continues.

NAIAS 2011: Day One and Only, Let's Call It a Wrap!

Winding down this very long day of media introductions inside the Cobo Arena in Detroit, MINI, Jeep, Kia and Chevrolet put a wrap on the day’s events, and Jeep and Chevy each have anniversary parties this year.

The MINI Paceman Concept retains the familiar MINI family frontal appearance but adds its own distinctive flavor. Large headlights with chrome surrounds extend deep into the front wings, and together with the distinctively contoured bonnet, emphasize the imposing nose of the Paceman. The radiator grill is essentially the same as that of the Cooper S Countryman, with additional air intakes in the bumper to deliver improved brake ventilation and the incorporation of new deep set fog lights.

From the side, the MINI Paceman Concept features a fresh interpretation of the front wing and side indicator that attracts the eye from the A-pillars down to the unique design 19-inch front wheels. This rugged and sturdy design element is complemented by dark wheel arch surrounds with matching side skirts that emphasize the masculine, sporting nature of Paceman.

The familiar MINI shoulder line that rises towards the rear of the Paceman Concept also hints at its sporting intent. Less familiar is the glass and roof treatment. As the waistline rises, the flat roofline flows into a wide C-pillar that appears to be transparent. The windows appear to wrap around the car like a band of glass with the roof ‘suspended’ on top and painted in a striking, contrasting color. This is known as the ‘helmet’ roof. The coupé-style windows taper towards the rear and the whole effect is one of a dynamic wedge shape.

“In contrast to the more vertical design of the MINI Countryman, we’ve given the MINI Paceman Concept a horizontal emphasis and accentuated the width of the car more to underline the powerful appearance of the study,” explained Marcus Syring, Head of MINI Exterior Design.

Jeep – one of the world’s few, true icons – is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2011. To mark the occasion, the Jeep brand is creating distinctive, unique 70th Anniversary Edition models of each vehicle in its lineup.

“The Jeep brand’s legendary heritage and capability have made it iconic – well-known and loved throughout the world,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “Since they were first produced in 1941, Jeep vehicles have been the authentic benchmark for off-road capability, having mastered more terrain, led more adventures and provided drivers more freedom than any other vehicle before or since.

“As part of our celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Jeep brand, we are creating stunning, premium special-edition models of each vehicle in our lineup that pay homage to the history of the legendary Jeep brand,” Manley added.

All Jeep 70th Anniversary Edition models will arrive in showrooms in the first quarter of 2011, and all will be available in a unique Bronze Star exterior paint, in addition to Bright Silver and Black.

Kia Motors' design-led transformation has delivered eye-catching vehicles such as the Soul, Forte Koup, Sorento and Sportage that bear strong resemblances to the concept cars that preceded them, and today at the 2011 North American International Auto Show the brand's U.S. design studio unveiled its latest design statement – the "KV7" concept. Conceived as a modern-day "activity van," the KV7 concept challenges the notion that vans are strictly for family transportation and reveals a vision for a vehicle with the functionality to transport a large number of people and their belongings while also serving as a connected social hub for groups of friends and adventure-seekers.

The KV7 concept's design stands in sharp contrast to the dramatically raked windshields and wedge-shaped noses found throughout the van segment, and builds on the philosophy of "embracing the box" established by Kia's funky Soul urban passenger vehicle to create a unique and alluring design language that brings SUV-like qualities to the segment.

"From the outset, we felt the category was in need of an honest reassessment due to the fact that everyone seems so desperate to attach the word 'sporty' to their minivan, even though vans, at their very core are simply a box," said Tom Kearns, chief designer, Kia Motors America. "Rather than reject the box we chose to celebrate it, just like we did with the Soul, and the result is a straightforward yet sophisticated vehicle that retains the functionality vans are known for and meets the changing and diverse needs of today's consumers."

Aside from the automaker’s announcement early in the day of the all-new Sonic as its entry-level replacement vehicle (kicking Aveo to the curb) Chevrolet used the last press conference of the day to usher in the year of its centennial celebration.

Chevrolet marks its centennial in 2011 and kicks off a year of anniversary activities at the North American International Auto Show.

Chevrolet was founded in Detroit, in November 1911, by racer Louis Chevrolet and General Motors founder William C. “Billy” Durant, who developed cars that quickly earned reputations for performance, durability and value. Those traits remain at the core of Chevrolet, which is the world’s fourth-largest automotive brand.

From the very start, Chevrolet brought technology and features typically reserved for more expensive cars to its lineup of affordable cars and trucks. The first Chevrolet – the Series C Classic Six – offered an electric starter and electric headlamps at a time when both were rarities among even luxury cars. In the decades that followed, innovations such as safety glass, fuel injection, anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control systems were used on Chevrolet models at the same time as more expensive vehicles. As one of the largest-selling brands in the industry, Chevrolet’s early adoption of landmark technologies fundamentally changed the way they were applied to new vehicles.

Honda showed off a new Civic that they are stilling saying is in concept form and Hyundai rolls out its new Veloster three-door coupe and teased the crowds with the Curb concept.

The Honda Civic Si Concept coupe and Civic Concept sedan are making world debuts at the North American International Auto Show today, providing the first official glimpse at the styling direction of the all-new, ninth-generation 2012 model set to go on sale this spring, the company announced.

"The Civic is known for providing a balance of 'just-right' packaging, fun-to-drive character and outstanding fuel economy, at a price that even first-time buyers can afford," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. "The redesigned Civic builds on this legacy and promises to be the best Civic yet."

The 2012 Civic embraces the company's vision as a "Civic for all people," a phrase originally expressed in defining the goal of the first-generation Civic. With the widest array of engine choices available in its class, the 2012 Civic lineup intends to meet the needs of an increasing group of compact-vehicle buyers with a renewed vision of a "Civic for all people." The diverse vehicle range includes a sedan and a coupe with conventional gasoline models, two sporty "Si" performance versions, along with one hybrid and a natural gas alternative-fuel variant. Collectively the depth of the Civic line offers a compelling balance between fuel economy, low emissions and fun-to-drive performance unlike any other vehicle in the industry.

Hyundai today introduced its cutting-edge Veloster three-door coupe in a world debut at the North American International Auto Show. The 2012 Veloster delivers innovation to the compact coupe segment with a unique third door for easy rear-seat access, Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system, Pandora internet radio with seven-inch touch-screen display, and a new 1.6-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine mated to Hyundai’s first dual-clutch transmission.

Hyundai California Design Center and Hyundai Motor America presented the world debut of the Hyundai Curb concept vehicle during a press conference at the Detroit International Auto Show today. Curb is a compact Urban Activity Vehicle (UAV) for the next generation of Hyundai buyers. Curb is also a test bed for future Hyundai Blue Link™ and vehicle connectivity technology.

The inspiration for Curb came from the need to evolve Hyundai’s “Fluidic Sculpture” design language for younger buyers. Hyundai designers wanted to create a vehicle loaded with technology that was at home in an urban environment with potholes and densely packed nightclubs on the streets. The vehicle needed to secure the advanced Blue Link and connectivity features against impact and shock. From these ideas, the ‘technology rugged’ design direction for Curb was formed.

“We wanted the Curb to be urban tough without looking like a Brink's truck,” said Jason Brown, Hyundai designer. “City driving was going to be its forte, not crossing the Rubicon trail, but we wanted it to have urban armor for daily driving on city streets. It needed to empower its passengers in this setting.”

“This is no ordinary family.  It’s a modern family with a Prius for everyone,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager.  “The Prius v is an all-new dedicated hybrid vehicle, and all future Prius family members will be as well.  They will all share common Prius attributes but will be unique, with a special appeal to different buyers.”

NAIAS 2011: Day One and Only, mid-morning

(download)

Mid-morning of Day One and Only for automakers at the 2011 NAIAS saw intros from Chrysler, Buick, Ford and GMC.

Through a thick French accent, Chrysler’s introduction of an all-new 300 sedan looked the same but we are promised it is all-new from the ground up and includes a center display that is “almost an iPad.” A constant tone of “best-in-class” resonated through the presentation but at this point about its only competition is the Dodge Charger, everyone else (domestically) has moved away from rear-drive sedans.

“The all-new 2011 Chrysler 300 is an icon of American ingenuity and symbolizes the greatness Detroit-designed vehicles offer the streets, highways and boulevards of the world,” said Olivier Francois, President and CEO — Chrysler Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “From its premium materials, state-of-the-art connectivity features, new chassis architecture and best-in-class power, the all-new Chrysler 300 embodies the brand’s new attitude in every detail. And to ensure our all-new Chrysler flagship delivers more than unmistakably bold and powerful American style to our customers, the Chrysler 300 team benchmarked the craftsmanship, technology and refinement of the segment’s best sedans to deliver a new world-class quality and performance symbol at an attainable price.”

The all-new 2012 Buick Verano compact luxury sedan, the brand’s third new model in the past two years and first in the compact luxury segment, will be revealed at the North American International Auto Show.

Verano goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2011, the latest model in a product renaissance that began with the Enclave and continued with the LaCrosse and Regal. Like them, Verano is distinguished by luxury and technology, including 10 standard air bags, an available heated steering wheel and a next-generation radio system with OnStar-powered connectivity that enables seamless communication between the Verano and the driver’s smart phone.

An Ecotec 2.4L and six-speed automatic powertrain combination is standard and delivers an estimated 177 horsepower (132 kW) and 170 lb.-ft. torque (230 Nm), 0-60 mph performance of 8.0 seconds and an estimated 31 mpg on the highway. A 2.0L turbo engine will be offered in the future.

“Verano expands our lineup, continues Buick’s momentum and gives us a great opportunity to attract a new generation of customers with a product that delivers on their expectations for design, performance and technology,” said John Schwegman, vice president of Buick marketing. “It is a smart choice that delivers unexpected luxury in a compact sedan – and it will compete head-to-head with competitors from Audi and Lexus.”

Ford Motor Company today unveiled its vision for a sleeker, sportier and more stylish compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) at the 2011 North American International Auto Show. The Ford Vertrek concept previews the company’s ambition for a next-generation, global compact SUV that could lead the industry in both design and fuel efficiency.

The Ford Vertrek concept is based on Ford’s global C-segment platform, which includes the all-new Ford Focus range launching early in 2011 in North America and Europe, plus the latest C-MAX and Grand C-MAX multi-activity vehicles. It represents the vision of the company’s top design and engineering talent on how best to attract and satisfy future sport utility vehicle customers around the world.

“Vertrek concept is a no-compromise solution we feel utility vehicle customers will embrace around the world,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president of Global Product Development. “It is a revolution compared to what is typically seen in this segment in North America and is a stylish evolution compared with products outside North America. This new design is sleeker and more fuel efficient and delivers the capability, including people and cargo volume, customers demand globally.”

The GMC Sierra All Terrain HD concept is an exploration of heavy-duty truck capability combined with greater off-road versatility. It is highlighted by a bold exterior design, enhanced all-terrain suspension and premium details expected of a GMC – all designed to enable greater access to off-road destinations.

The new 2011 Sierra HD underpins the All Terrain HD concept, with a modified, production-based 4WD chassis and the Duramax diesel/Allison 1000 six-speed powertrain. The enhanced suspension and unique body dimensions, including increased ground clearance and wider track, as well as greater approach/departure angles, deliver off-road capability while maintaining HD levels of payload and trailering capacity.

“The Sierra All Terrain HD concept takes GMC’s outstanding new HD platform to the next level, marries it to the legendary Duramax diesel/Allison transmission, and provides a heavy-duty expression of GMC’s premium All Terrain package,” said Lisa Hutchinson, GMC product marketing director. “It delivers the exceptional capabilities of the Sierra HD – hauling, towing and performance – and applies them to the toughest driving environments. It’s the ultimate professional-grade tool for construction crews, ranchers and adventurers whose activities aren’t limited by where the pavement ends.”

NAIAS 2011: Day One and Only, Dawn of a new Detroit Auto Show

(download)

Day one of the 2011 North American International Auto Show is going to be a very busy one, mainly because it is the only day that automakers will host press conferences. Given the congested nature of the day’s schedule I will break it down into several parts with a few brands already taking stage before many have had the opportunity to down their first cup of joe. Porsche, Chevy, Ford and Volkswagen lead off the morning.

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is continuing to extend its performance and high efficiency competence via intensive development work in the field of hybrid technology. With the Porsche 918 RSR, the manufacturer of sporty premium vehicles is presenting a high-end synthesis of 2010's successful hybrid concepts. The two-seater mid-engine coupe 918 RSR clearly reveals what happens when the technology fitted in the 911 GT3 R hybrid and the design of the 918 Spyder are transferred to a modern, innovative super sports car.

Motor racing technology also dominates within the particularly light, torsionally stiff carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque. The V8 engine is a further development of the direct injection engine from the successful RS Spyder race car and now offers an output of precisely 563 hp at 10,300 rpm in the 918 RSR. The electric motors on the two front wheels each contribute 75 kW, i.e. a total of 150 kW, to the peak drive power of exactly 767 hp. This additional power, which is generated during braking, is stored in an optimized flywheel accumulator.

Chevrolet displayed the all-new 2012 Sonic at the North American International Auto Show. Its youthful, aggressive design is backed by turbocharged performance and agile ride and handling, combining to deliver an efficient, fun-to-drive small car.

The Sonic is offered in two body styles: a stylish four-door sedan and a sporty five-door. Each delivers class-leading rear-seat roominess and cargo space. A variety of connectivity features enhance the driving experience.

"The all-new Chevrolet Sonic blends the practicality of a small car with the passion for driving that Chevrolet vehicles like the Corvette are known for," said Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. "Its combination of great design, fun driving experience and the latest connectivity features create a serious competitor with a fun spirit."

Ford today revealed two next-generation hybrid vehicles – including its first production plug-in hybrid electric vehicle – at the 2011 North American International Auto Show, bringing consumers more choice, versatility and style for high-mileage family-friendly vehicles.

Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid and C-MAX Hybrid are based on the new Ford C-MAX five-passenger multi-activity vehicle, and each will offer high mileage and low emissions as well as distinctive body design and a flexible interior. The plug-in hybrid and third-generation full hybrid leverage Ford's global C-car platform, acclaimed powersplit architecture, next-generation driver information features and advanced lithium-ion battery systems.

"C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid will be perfect for families looking to maximize their hybrid car experience," said Nancy Gioia, Ford director of Global Electrification. "Thanks to the versatile interior, these cars are going to appeal to environmentally conscious consumers who need room to grow."

Volkswagen of America, Inc., today announced the world debut of the all-new Passat, a transformational car in Volkswagen's ambitious growth plan for the U.S. market.

Designed in Germany and made in America, the Passat was developed as a larger vehicle with premium features and handling characteristics that will perfectly match it with the tastes and lifestyles of Americans. It will be built in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the world's newest, most advanced and environmentally responsible auto assembly plant.

The new Passat, the largest ever, is the only midsize sedan that offers superior German engineering at an accessible price. The Passat TDI -- the only clean diesel option in the segment -- is expected to deliver 43 miles per gallon on the highway, with a range of approximately 800 miles.

Final pricing will be announced in the spring, but the Passat will start at around $20,000 when it arrives in dealer showrooms later this year. It will come with premium standard features that include automatic climate control and Bluetooth connectivity.

The 2011 Ford Explorer has been named North American Truck of the Year at the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit this morning. As a finalist it beat out the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango for top honors.

In the North American Car of the Year competition, two of the three finalists are electric vehicles, although one does have a range extending gas engine onboard and this is what kicked it over the top to make the Chevrolet Volt as the top car over the Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Sonata.
